The Rancher's Law deals with romantic or simply sexual relationships between three couples. The monologues of Kid, a rancher who skillfully flourishes his rope, frame Salcedo's paintings where prostitution, robbery, a massacre, crime and passions —hetero, homo and bisexual— are the starting point for a deep exploration of human nature. But if Salcedo addresses a crudely real world, he does so with enormous artifice, both in the weaving of the drama and in the texture of his dialogues. His analytical capacity goes beyond the direct portrayal of reality. Behind everything is power, patriarchal mentality, force and horror, themes that, ultimately, lead us to the second text that accompanies this title, The Smell of War, a work with an indeterminate setting, since what matters is the analysis of the forms of contemporary war and oppression anywhere in the world.
